BetCBSports.com Odds Maker Comments on Attacks

16 Apr 2004

ZAPOTE, Costa Rica – (PRESS RELEASE) -- In the latest phase of international cyber terror, distributed denial of service, or DDOS attacks as they are commonly called, are sweeping the offshore gaming world. Recently, there has been a rash of these attacks aimed at several online sportsbooks and casinos, in which international cyber criminals and hackers have threatened to shut down the sportsbooks' websites by overloading their web servers and crippling the sportsbooks' ability to function, unless an exorbitant "protection" fee is paid.

These hackers have managed to extort several thousands of dollars from multiple online sportsbooks. "It truly has become an industry-wide problem," said BetCBSports.com Senior Odds Maker, Dan "The Man" Johnson. "Luckily, we have a tremendous team of technological experts working for us and we were able to triumph over these gutless hacks."

In technical terms, a distributed denial of service (DDOS) attack is an incident in which an Internet user or organization is deprived of the services of a resource they would normally expect to have. Typically, the loss of service is the inability of a particular network service, such as e-mail, to function properly, or the temporary loss of all network connectivity and services. In the worst case, for example, a Web site accessed by millions of people could be forced to temporarily cease operation. A denial of service attack is a type of security breach of a computer system, but does not usually result in the theft of information or other security loss. These kinds of attacks, however, can cost the target person or company a great deal of time and money.

Mr. Dan Johnson, Senior Odds Maker of BetCBSports.com, is available for comment and interviews regarding the successful triumph of BetCBSports.com over the attempted DDOS attacks on its Web site. Topics that Mr. Johnson can address, but to which he is not limited, are as follows:

* The strategy of BetCBSports.com to counter likely future DDOS attacks.

* A copy of the actual extortion letter from the cyber terrorists demanding $50,000 for their "protection" against future attacks for a one-year period.

* The collaboration of BetCBSports.com with other competing sportsbooks in an effort to defeat these hackers with a single voice.

* Information BetCBSports.com has obtained regarding the location and possible identities of the cyber hackers.
