BC Lottery head paid $94,000 bonus after firing

24 Sep 2008

BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada -- As reported by CBC: "The former head of B.C. Lottery Corp. was paid $94,000 in bonuses the year he was fired, despite a scathing report that found the Crown corporation was failing to protect customers from possible fraud, CBC News has learned.

"Details of former president Vic Poleschuk's bonus and other payouts were revealed in documents obtained by a freedom of information request by CBC News.

"With his severance and bonuses, Poleschuk became the highest-paid civil servant in British Columbia in 2007, bringing in a total package worth $829,644.

"Seven other B.C. Lottery executives were also given bonuses that year, totalling another quarter of a million dollars.

"A report issued in May 2007 by B.C. ombudsman Kim Carter determined the Lottery Corp. was doing little to prevent or investigate fraud while retailers and their employees were winning more often than they should under a properly run system.

"...The findings led to the firing of Poleschuk by the board of directors in June 2007..."
