Ask the Slot Expert: Does buy-in affect results on a slot machine?

8 Aug 2012

By John Robison, Slot Expert™

Does a slot machine know the amount of money that is deposited at the start of play for a person and does that have any bearing on the percentage of payout?

Let me start with your second question first. The amount of money you deposit into a machine has no effect whatsoever on your results. The Random Number Generator (RNG) doesn't care or even know how many credits you have. Your chances of hitting a winning combination are the same regardless of whether you have enough credits for one spin or 100.

Now, does the program running the slot machine know how much money you put in? Of course, it does. It has to know how many credits you have so it knows whether to light the Bet Max button and any other predefined betting buttons the machine has. But lighting certain buttons is the only effect the number of credits you have has on the machine.

Jackpots for all,
John
