Are the results of bonus rounds predetermined?

20 Feb 2010

By John Robison

My question is about the bonus round on slot machines. For example, on a machine called Cafe Mula, I have to pick drinks. If I get three coffee cups the bonus round ends.

Is it really my luck or does the machine predetermine what I will win? Because sometimes I do great and then other times right off the bat the round ends. When the screen shows what I could have chosen, I am sometimes very unlucky I got the only pick saying that it was over. A lot of my friends say it's just luck. I thought the machine picks what you will win or not.

Who is right?

Laura

Dear Laura,

The machine does not predetermine what you will win on the bonus round. The only things predetermined are the values of the drinks. Your choices during the bonus round determine how much you win. When the machine reveals the values at the end of the bonus round, it's showing you what you could have won had you made different choices.

Best of luck in and out of the casinos,
John
