Americas Cardroom's Million Dollar Sunday tournament breaks prize pool record
26 Apr 2016
Sunday night's $1 million guaranteed poker tournament saw 2,118 entries fuel the prize pool to $1,059,000. It was the biggest prize pool in Americas Cardroom's history.
"We've been saying that poker in America is officially back, but this absolutely changes everything," said Michael Harris, spokesperson for Americas Cardroom. "Our $1 million guaranteed tournament was our biggest yet. Yes, we're thrilled to have not overlaid, but this isn't about money. It's about watching our community grow to easily support such a big tourney. Exciting things are ahead."
The Million Dollar Sunday, which featured a field of 2,118, was dominated by online poker player OIDA!!!, who earned the first place prize of $211,800. With $200,000 guaranteed for the winner, the first place prize was above and beyond any previous Million Dollar Sunday payout.
In second place was DrunkSkunk86, who earned $115,961. Following closely in third place was Whoareya1, who earned $77,095 in the tournament that lasted over 13 hours.
The final table featured some familiar faces, including 1234JE, who dominated The Cage back in December for nearly $8,000. His sixth place finish in the Million Dollar Sunday earned him another $32,723.
While the next installment of the Million Dollar Sunday has yet to be announced, players don't have to wait long for a tournament with a large guarantee. Every weekend, Americas Cardroom hosts the $115,000 GTD Sunday Special. The tournament often sees final prize pools beyond what is guaranteed, but with a renewed appetite for larger-than-life poker tournaments, this Sunday's version could be record breaking.
