67-year-old Canadian wins WPT title
NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario -- As reported by The Niagara Falls Review: "Glen Whitmer may have looked out of place Thursday, but he proved he belonged exactly where he was.
"The 67-year-old man from Waterloo won the $1.22 million winner's purse at the World Poker Tour's North American Poker Championship held at the casino's Grand Hall.
"It took seven and a half hours to work down from six players to one Thursday night, as one-by-one the more experienced professionals at the table were eliminated by the virtually unknown amateur from Waterloo. Whitmer clinched the title around 11:30 p. m. Thursday when he knocked off Gavin Smith, a long time professional who has earned more than $3 million playing in tournaments. The Las Vegas resident Smith, who is originally from Guelph and wore a Team Canada hat at the taped-for-television final table, went all in with a pair of fives and lost to an ace, king when the river card turned up another ace to give Whitmer the high pair.
