£156,400 win for Newey at British Poker Open

9 Sep 2019

(PRESS RELEASE) -- The third event at the inaugural British Poker Open has been won by Paul Newey. Newey beat a field of 46 entrants at Aspers Casino Westfield Stratford City in London to get his maiden tournament victory roughly seven years after his first tournament result. Newey now has 57 total tournament results and $5.3 million in total earnings.

From the winner: "It’s the first time I’ve won a big live event and I won all my all-ins — that makes it easier!" said Newey after the event. "I had just over three big blinds at my lowest point and I got lucky again yesterday," he said upon victory. The humble Brit has won his first-ever live event at this level on the eve of his 51st birthday, what a present for the colorful character at the tables.

Cary Katz was the first player to get eliminated when he shoved ace-nine into the ace-seven of Mikita Badziakouski. The Belorussian pro hit a seven to double up and Katz busted on the next hand with ace-four versus Elio Fox’s ten-nine.

Sam Greenwood, brother of Event No. 1 winner Luc, busted in fifth place after his flopped top pair proved no match for Paul Newey’s flopped flush. Former World Series of Poker Europe Main Event winner Elio Fox busted in third place when he ran into the kings of Sam Soverel with a mere queen-nine. The board brought no help and Soverel found himself heads up for the second straight event.

The heads-up match could be boiled down to one crucial hand as Newey pulled out a win with nines versus Soverel’s jacks when the stacks were near even. Watch that hand right here.
