Taiwan’s sports lottery products have been available online since May 2008.

While foreign online operators are not allowed to provide their services in Taiwan, Taiwanese residents may play on any sites that accept Taiwanese players.

Taiwan’s tough stance on gambling coupled with a large betting population has led to several raids, the largest one taking place in 2007, when 120 arresting officers shut down what was thought to be a three-month-old online gambling operation. The casino was set up in a rented television studio in Taipei, where the casino action was broadcast onto a website. The operators hoped to create the illusion that the casino was being run from China and that the server was hosted in the Philippines.
