Rank chief pessimistic about UK casino plans
UNITED KINGDOM -- As reported by the UK Guardian: "The head of gambling group Rank said today he expects few of Britain's 16 planned new casinos to be built, as he flagged a tough year ahead.
"'We don't think many of them will be built because with the government's increase in the casino tax last year a number of those potential locations are marginal,' said Rank's chief executive Ian Burke. 'We are interested in a small number ... small in the context of 16 could be under 5, yes.'
"The comments came as the firm announced that trading had stabilised somewhat at its Mecca Bingo halls and Grosvenor casinos, which have been hit hard by a combination of the smoking ban, the removal of slot machines from bingo clubs and a surprise hike in casino tax. It still faces a tough year ahead, Burke admitted..."
