Mohawks Favored to Win Casino

NEW YORK -- As reported by the New York Daily News: "The St. Regis Mohawk Indian tribe is now the odds-on favorite to get the first - and likely only - Catskills casino, according to Albany's top Democrat.

"'It's the least objectionable plan,' Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver (D-Manhattan) said yesterday, adding that the tribe has secured labor agreements with unions.

"Silver, whose backing is necessary for any new casino to open in New York, said one casino in the Catskills is enough.

"Gov. Pataki initially favored five casinos, a plan that would have turned the once bustling Borscht Belt resort region into a top rival of Atlantic City for gambling dollars.

"But a Pataki spokeswoman, Jennifer Meicht, said the governor this week will back a revamped measure that would authorize only the St. Regis Mohawk casino…"
