Malaysia abandons sports gambling
30 Jun 2010
MALAYSIA -- The Malaysian government, on consideration, refused to issue a sports betting licence to Ascott Sports according to a Bernama report.
There had been rumours of Malaysia embracing sports betting to combat illegal gambling on the World Cup.
However the decision came down against issuing a licence because the "majority" of opinion opposed it, Bernama reported.
A licence had been issued in 1989 was returned to the government after company losses and the subsequent efforts to renew it have so far failed, the report noted.
