Choctaw chief won't follow vote
MISSISSIPPI -- As reported by the Mississippi Press: "The newly-elected chief of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians says he will not abide by a non-binding referendum concerning the tribe's proposal to build a casino in Jackson County.
"'That's not the decision of the Choctaw people. No, I would not abide by it,' Choctaw Chief Beasley Denson told Jackson's WLBT-TV, according to a report by the Associated Press.
"Under long-time Chief Phillip Martin, whom Denson beat in a runoff election July 3, Choctaws proposed building a casino on about 100 acres the tribe owns on Miss. 57 south of Ocean Springs Road and north of the Sunplex Industrial Complex.
"The $325 million casino would have more than 2,300 slot machines and a 400-seat buffet. The hotel part of the casino would feature 1,100 rooms, theater, indoor and outdoor pools, and a fitness center..."
